Bu Benim Fotoğrafım | This is a Photograph of Me halka sanat projesi ile Kanadalı sanat inisiyatifi Arts Assembly’nin iki yıllık küratöyal değişim projesi COMMON GROUND | UYUŞMA TEMELİ’nin ikinci yıl sergisidir. Küratörlüğünü İpek Çankaya’nın yaptığı sergi önce, 13 – 30 Haziran 2019’da Vancouver’da, ardından, 03 Temmuz – 18 Ağustos tarihleri arasında halka sanat projesi’nde izleyiciye sunulmaktadır.
Kanada merkezli sanatçılar Tanya P. Johnson ve Terriann Walling’in işlerini gösteren İstanbul ayağı, projenin her iki yılına ait belge, yazı ve görselleri de içeren bir dokümantasyondan oluşur. Sergi başlığı Kanadalı şair ve yazar Margaret Atwood’un aynı adlı şiirinden esinlenilmiştir.
Kavramsal Çerçeve:
Bu Benim Fotoğrafım | This is a Photograph of Me kişinin yaşam, ölüm, yoksunluk, savunmasızlık, direnç ve dönüşüm gibi bireysel deneyimleri nasıl karşıladığını ve bu durumlar kısıtlayıcı engeller haline geldiğinde onlarla mücadele ya da barışma yollarını sorgular. Diğer bir deyişle sergi, insanlık durumu olarak kabul edilen ve kişinin kimliğinin oluşmasına etki eden, ya da kendini tam olarak gerçekleştirmesinin önünde beliren engelleri, bunlara verdiği tepkileri ve her türlü kısıtlı erişimin ne anlama geldiğini araştırır.
Kısıtlı erişim birbiriyle ilişkili durum, mekan ve ilişkilerde deneyimlenir. Serginin iki sanatçısı Tanya P. Johnson ve Terriann Walling’in görsel ve metinsel işleri, duyulmamış ya da yanlış anlaşılmış bireysel sesleri ve kişinin kendisi ve kökleriyle yeniden bağ kurma arayışını tartışmaya açar.
Serginin sorduğu sorulardan bazıları şöyledir: Kendimizi nasıl gerçekleştiririz; kendini gerçekleştirmek sadece kişinin kendisi ile mi ilgilidir; bizi bütünlük duygusuna götüren yol ne olabilir; birey olarak görünür olmak nedir, varlığımızı kısıtlayan durumlara başkaldırmak, onlarla mücadele etmek ya da uzlaşmak nasıl olabilir?
Serginin kavramsal çerçevesi iki eksen üzerine oturmaktadır. Bu eksenlerden ilki 2017 sonunda COMMON GROUND | UYUŞMA TEMELİ projesi ilk ortaya çıktığında araştırma zemini olarak belirlenen üç kavramdır. Bu kavramlar insanlık durumu, kısıtlı erişim ve denge ya da denge yitimidir. Projenin birinci yılında Lara Ögel ile Merve Ünsal’ın işlerini gösteren Tutma | Hold adlı sergi bu kavramları fiziksel (meskun) mekanda varoluş ve prekarite anlamında incelerken, ikinci yıl sergisi ilk yıla cevap olarak onları farklı bir bağlama oturtur. Bu bağlam, kendini ifade etmenin sınırlanışı ve bireysel kimliktir. Böylece ortak kavramlardan yola çıkan ama kendi özgün yollarını oluşturan iki sergi, iki odak noktası ve bir alışveriş belirmiş olur.
Kavramsal çerçevenin ikinci kurucu ekseni ise Margaret Atwood’un sergiye adını veren şiiridir. Güçlü bir kadın sesi tarafından kaleme alınan, derin bir kırılma, görünmezlik ve ölümle yüzleşme anlatısı kadar, şiirin ifade dili ve tonu da serginin rengini belirlemeye öncülük eder. Johnson ve Walling’in işleri derin ve duyarlı düşünceyle yaratıcılığın özgün ve incelikli ifadeleri olarak Atwood’un yüksek sesle bağırmayan ancak büyük bir ustalıkla okuru derinden etkileyerek avucunun içine alan, özü dolu tonuna yanıt niteliği taşır.

Bu Benim Fotoğrafım | This is a Photograph of Me is the second year exhibition of COMMON GROUND | UYUŞMA TEMELİ, the two-year curatorial exchange project between halka sanat projesi and ARTS ASSEMBLY Vancouver. Curated by İpek Çankaya, Bu Benim Fotoğrafım | This is a Photograph of Me take places at halka sanat projesi between 03 July – 18 August 2019, after its debut in June 2019 in Vancouver. The exhibition shows works by Canada based artists Tanya P. Johnson and Terriann Walling as well as documentation from both years of the project. Exhibition title is inspired by Margaret Atwood’s poem of the same title.
Conceptual Framework:
Bu Benim Fotoğrafım | This is a Photograph of Me questions ways of facing experiences of loss, longing, vulnerability, resilience and transformation in life and how one reacts under these circumstances when they become restrictions in their life. In other words, the exhibition explores the meaning of a restricted access in relation to what is considered a human condition. It investigates the setbacks against a satisfying self-realization and its effects on one’s personality. Forms of any emotionally restricted access and human responses to it are under the radar of the exhibition.
Restricted access is experienced in conditions, places and encounters that are in relation to one and other. Tanya P. Johnson’s and Terriann Walling’s visual works, poems and concentric stories open a discussion on the unheard or the misplaced in an attempt to uncover individual voices and experiences to reconnect with oneself and one’s roots.
Questions that the exhibition addresses are as follows: How do we realize ourselves; is self-realization only about the individual or is it related to others as well; what does it mean to be visible; what can be the way that leads us to the sense of inner completeness; and how can we challenge or make peace with situations that restrict us?
The conceptual framework of the exhibition is based on two axes. Three concepts has come to the surface when the project COMMON GROUND | UYUŞMA TEMELİ is initially conceived in late 2017. These are: The human condition, restricted access and instability. In the first year of the project, the exhibition Tutma | Hold that has featured works by Lara Ögel and Merve Ünsal investigates these concepts in the sense of occupation and precarity of physical space. As a response, the second year exhibition places them into a different context which is the restriction of expressing oneself and personal identity. Hence, comes forward an exchange between two exhibitions having their distinct voices with different focuses based on the same concepts.
The second founding axe of the conceptual framework is the poem by Margaret Atwood that gives the exhibition its title. Written by a powerful female voice, its expressive language and tone pioneer in determining the colour of the exhibition as much as its narrative dealing with a deep break down and facing with death does. As expressions of a deep and sensible comprehension combined with an intrinsic and authentic creativity, works by Johnson and Walling respond to Atwood’s tone that holds the breath of her reader in her palm with an essence that profoundly moves without shouting loud.
