2015 Intern Artist Program

The Intern Artist Program at Franconia offers undergraduate and graduate students, as well as emerging artists the opportunity to create large-scale three-dimensional artwork, develop their nascent artistic practice, receive mentorship from professional artists-in-residence, conduct public presentations, and participate in public engagement programs while in residency at Franconia. The rural setting and chance to work along side peers & mid-career artists creates a dynamic setting for artists to grow, learn, and mature.
The Intern Artist Program is the brainchild of John Hock, co-founder and Artistic Director/CEO, based on pivotal experiences he had as a young artist. The program began with the park’s founding in 1996 and has grown to support more than 200 emerging artists to date. Recognized by the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts for program excellence, the program is designed to bridge the gap between the academic world of artistic training and a professional career.
• Up to 15 artists will be selected for the program.
• Intern Artist residencies last two to three months, there are three sessions to which applicants may apply:
1. April 1 to June 15, 2015
2. June 16 to August 15, 2015
3. August 16 to November 20, 2015
• Artists share bedroom and communal space in an onsite 9-bedroom farmhouse.
◦ Cooking and cleaning duties are shared by all residents and are assigned on a rotating schedule.
• Studio space in the 7,000 square foot outdoor work area is shared by all artists-in-residence.
• Intern Artists are invited to create new work for inclusion in the current exhibition.
• Franconia is a public park; Intern Artists interact with the public on a daily basis.
• Heavy equipment needed to produce large-scale artwork is available.
◦ Intern Artists should expect to supply hand tools, small power tools, and safety equipment. Please plan accordingly.

• Intern Artists must fund their own travel expenses and sculpture material costs. To offset travel and material expenses, some schools or private individuals may sponsor internships. To learn more about intern sponsorship, click here.
• Work in a supportive environment where career-bound artists are stimulated, challenged, and rewarded by the process of creating large-scale sculpture and/or installation
• Have space and time for informal critique and reflection with peers and mid-career artists.
• Learn new technical skills through helping maintain the park grounds, sculpture exhibit, and assisting Fellowship Artists.
• Build lifelong friendships and important professional networks.
• Gain experience engaging the public through the arts.
• 75% Park Programing & Maintenance
◦ Art Interns are involved in our education and outreach programs by providing guided tours, working in a teaching artist capacity at workshops and assisting with Franconia’s public events.
◦ Daily responsibilities include maintaining the sculpture exhibit, landscaping, prepare and dismantle for events, and special projects as assigned
• 25% Fellowship Artist Assistance
◦ Intern Artist will assist fellowship artists. The Site Manager and the requesting fellowship artist arrange assistance hours. Time spent assisting artists should be viewed as a mentorship where the intern artist has
the opportunity to learn new skills.

The application deadline for the 2015 Intern Artist Residency is February 13, 2015. Materials must be received via email by MIDNIGHT CST. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

materials to internartists@franconia.org.

Application materials must be received by MIDNIGHT CST on February 13, 2015.
Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. You will receive a confirmation email upon receipt of application materials. If you do not receive a confirmation email, your application materials were not received correctly. It is the applicant’s responsibility to contact Franconia Staff if you do not receive a confirmation email to ensure your materials were received. Applicants will be notified in March 2015 of the status of their application.
