Willie Green: Press Play
June 21st – July 21st, 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, June 21st 6:00-8:00pm
Massey Klein Gallery is pleased to announce, Press Play, a musical and visual exhibition curated and produced by Willie Green.  The exhibition will be on view from June 21st through July 21st with an artist’s reception on Friday, June 21st from 6-8pm.

Producer Willie Green’s latest project uses a unique software process that converts an image into sound, effectively allowing him to sample select artwork from the gallery’s roster of artists.  After importing images of each painting, print, or drawing, visual qualities of the art are translated into complex audio waveforms that are then manipulated into distinct instrumental sounds, including drums, synths, and more.  Armed with only these avant-garde tones, Green has composed an original album, Press Play, that has been directly created from each work of art and is also a sonic expression of his own interpretation of each piece.  During the exhibition reception on June 21st, the album will be played in its entirety throughout the gallery.

During the remainder of the exhibition, visitors to the gallery will be encouraged to listen to each of the 10 tracks composed in response to the artwork.  Curation of the exhibition will follow the album’s track development, starting with Song 1 in the front gallery.  Near each painting, there will be headphones installed to experience the musical compositions.  Visual artists whose work will be included in the exhibition are Giulia Dall’Olio, Michael Holman, Stephane Joannes, Martine Johanna, Garrett Klein, Matthew Larson, Wouter Nijland, and Laura Sallade.

Paul “Willie Green” Womack is a Brooklyn-based record producer and audio engineer, and a mainstay of the independent Hip-Hop scene. One of the sonic architects of the sub-genre known as “Art-Rap”, Green challenges conventions with his dense sonic landscapes, pounding drums, and innovative sampling techniques. A drummer from a young age and a graduate of Berklee College of Music, Green brings a diverse musical background including jazz, classical, and soul to the dusty looped world of Hip-Hop. As a member of the Audio Engineering Society, Green also strongly promotes audio education, serving as Hip-Hop and R&B Chair of the Convention Committee and a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Willie Green and Massey Klein Gallery would like to extend special thanks to each visual artist involved in Press Play and to AKG and Harman for their generous support in providing headphones for the exhibition.

Massey Klein Gallery is located at 124 Forsyth St. New York, NY 10002.
Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday 11:00 AM – 6:00PM and Sunday 1:00PM – 6:00PM.

Sofonisba, Portraits of the Soul, Chiara Montani

=&0=& Set in 16th century Europe, this is the story of a brave, passionate and truly modern woman, in love with art and life itself. December 1579. On the deck of a galley a woman stands staring into the darkness. She is alone, bewildered and with no fight left in her. Even she doesn’t know what it is that draws her to the dark swirl of the waves beneath the keel, but she can’t help leaning out towards it. A jolt, a fall and a hand stretching out to save her… This is where the journey starts as events unfold in the adventurous life of Sofonisba Anguissola, the first female artist to challenge the conventions of the time and achieve international fame in a struggle to assert her role and her identity. Sofonisba’s travels take her from the town where she was born, Cremona, in Lombardy, at that time dominated by the Spaniards, to the oppressive atmosphere of the court in Madrid under Felipe II, then to Sicily under the viceroys, in a fascinating mix of artists’ colours with a backdrop of history, drama, intrigue, adventure and romance. The fresco is painted through Sofonisba’s sensitive gaze, capable of capturing the human soul and possessing freedom of thought, inevitably destined to clash with the prejudices of her time. Will she be able to tackle the challenges that life throws at her all the time and finally summon the courage to claim the right to be the master of her own destiny? History, art, beauty and emotion run through the pages of this historical novel which traces the unforgettable figure of a fascinating heroine who, like Artemisia Gentileschi, was destined to occupy a place of honour among the great women in art history. =&1=& Chiara Montani studied Architecture at the Polytechnic University in Milan. She has worked in design, graphics and art, exploring a variety of techniques and materials and taking part in exhibitions in Italy and elsewhere. Specialized in art therapy, she has held workshops for a number of years on the therapeutic potential of the creative process. Her long experience in the artistic field merges with her passion for literature to produce narratives where art intertwines closely with the plot, while descriptions of paintings become tools to explore characters, relationships and moods. One day, an artist friend dedicated these words to her: “The more you paint, the more a narrative fabric of words emerges; the more you produce narration, the denser and more fluid become the images”. =&2=& https://chiaramontani.com/?lang=en =&3=& https://www.facebook.com/chiaramontaniwriter https://www.instagram.com/chiaramontaniwriter/ DEVAMINI OKUYUN
