Axelle New York welcomes back Maltese artist Ġoxwa for The Past Made Present, her tenth solo exhibition at the gallery. Ġoxwa’s encaustic works unite an age-old technique with timeless subjects and contemporary relevance. Her textured landscapes, still-lifes and figures appear to be Mediterranean frescoes painted on the walls of ancient buildings. Using oil, wax and a palette knife on canvas, Ġoxwa creates glimpses into another world- one where the past,  present and future exist side by side. Her defined subjects are often surrounded by unclear backgrounds verging on abstraction. Full of life, Ġoxwa’s birds feel as though they are about to fly, her landscapes about to change and her women about to acknowledge the viewer.

Ġoxwa states:

I would like to think that I am being faithful to those old fresco painters, who were of course “modern” in their days uniting technique and feeling, careful observation of the world around them with fading but still living traditions of an art that must go back to the painters on the walls of caves thousands of years ago.

In fact, Ġoxwa’s whole life has been permeated by the coupling of the past and present.  Her name itself is an ancient form of Josephine. She grew up on the streets of Valletta, where she played in the some of the world’s oldest freestanding buildings. However, she also experienced a very modern Malta amidst a time of great political and social upheaval after Malta gained its independence from the UK in 1964. At the age of 19, she left Malta and studied art in London at The Saint Martin School of Art; afterwards, she studied film at Emerson College in Boston. Studying in cities known both for their historical significance and for their cosmopolitan cultures, Ġoxwa continued to be surrounded by a stark juxtaposition of the past and present.

After her time at Emerson, Ġoxwa had begun to develop a style unusual for modern artists using wax and oil; indeed, the encaustic painting process dates back to approximately 100-300 AD. She had her first solo show in Massachusetts and consequently was awarded a scholarship at the Cite des Artes in Paris. Upon her return to Europe, her first major exhibition completely sold out, as did her second. Her exhibitions since then, both in the US and abroad, have seen similar success.

All of these dualities are encapsulated in her aptly titled new collection, The Past Made Present. Ġoxwa will attend the opening reception on November 8.

SOLO EXHIBITION

November 6 – December 6, 2014

OPENING RECEPTION ON THURSDAY NOV 6, 6-8PM (RSVP REQUIRED)

Girafe, 108″ x 19½” x 39½”                 Orangutan, 59″ x 59″ x 27½”                              Autruche III, 89″ x 18″ x 31″

BERTRAND DELACROIX GALLERY presents BESTIARY, a solo exhibition of new sculptures and drawings by distinguished French artist, QUENTIN GARELBestiary is Garel’s second solo exhibition at BDG. It follows the success of Garel’s US solo debut,  Gueule De Bois (May 2013). The new collection will include limited edition bronze sculptures, unique carvings in wood and large charcoal drawings on paper. Garel is internationally renowned for his distinctive bronze animal busts and skulls with perfected patinas that resemble wood and bone.

Garel’s monumental subjects range from the busts of monkeys, fish and giraffes to bird and crocodile skulls. Garel begins each piece by drawing numerous charcoal sketches to plan the piece – these preparatory studies are unique pieces of art that will be included in the exhibition. These meticulously rendered drawings offer an illuminating glimpse into the artist’s method. It is evident that the drawings come from the hands of a talented sculptor; they are almost 3-dimensional in their careful depiction of each angle, movement and gesture. Afterwards, Garel masterfully carves his bold pieces in wood (or sometimes Styrofoam) using a chainsaw, among other tools. Finally, his pieces are cast into bronze at the Bocquel Foundry, France’s leading foundry. The remarkably executed patinas on the finished sculptures truly distinguish Garel’s work; the bronzes appear to be ancient fossils,  real wood or bone – often, it is necessary to touch the pieces to distinguish their true mediums.

Born in 1975 in France, the young artist now lives and works in Normandy. Garel has been commissioned for several notable public works, including a series of sculptures in the Public Gardens in Lille and another in the garden of the Tour Carpe Diem in Paris. Since his first solo show in 2002 in Paris, Garel has received several prestigious awards for drawing and sculpting from institutions such as the Salon De Mai in Paris, the Académie des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d’art contemporain de Montrouge. Garel will attend the opening reception on November 6.

FEDERICO INFANTE

THE SPACE BETWEEN

SOLO EXHIBITION

October 2 – November 1, 2014

OPENING RECEPTION ON THURSDAY OCT 2, 6-8PM (RSVP REQUIRED)

BDG is thrilled to present Federico Infante’s debut US solo exhibition, THE SPACE BETWEEN. The young Chilean’s acrylic masterpieces blend figurative and abstract elements to create ethereal worlds on paper and canvas. His all-new collection will remain true to his signature style but will experiment with new themes and artistic directions as he evolves as a painter; Infante himself said he is proud of the “maturity of the [upcoming] collection.”

Inspired by the Chilean landscape, by everyday life in New York City and by his own intuition, Infante creates honest paintings that portray beautiful, dream-like universes. His compositions incorporate sections of realism with portions of abstraction. Infante seamlessly juxtaposes layers of multiple colors to achieve serene and powerful palettes. The colorful backgrounds of his works, some more articulated than others, are typically foggy with visible evidence of the artist’s process – drips and streaks of paint. Emerging from these unclear surroundings, the viewer finds a beautifully rendered figure, usually turned away or unaware of the viewer’s gaze. The carefully articulated subject in contrast to the hazy background mirrors the relationship between reality, spirituality and the subconscious. His distinct paintings are capable of communicating so much through a single image.

Although he is a young artist, Infante has quickly distinguished himself in the American market. Since his introduction to the gallery in the spring of last year, Infante’s works have consistently sold out. Infante received his BFA from Finis Terrae University in 2002 and graduated in the spring of 2013 with his MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York. He was the recipient of the Uanlane Foundation Scholarship (2012), the Conicyt Scholarship (2009), and the Juan Downey Grant (2004). He has had several successful solo and group exhibitions in Chile. His work has been adopted into private collections across the US and internationally, including France, Belgium, Germany and Singapore. Infante currently lives and works in New York; he will attend the opening on October 2 and is available for interviews.
