2014 Juried Biennial
Dec. 14, 2014 – Feb. 7, 2015
Over the past 15 years, the William D. Cannon Art Gallery’s Juried Biennial Exhibitions have become an important showcase for the work of both emerging and mid-career
artists in San Diego County. This year’s jurors for the Biennial are Tina Yapelli, Director of the University Art Gallery at San Diego State University and John D. Spiak, Director of the Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana. In addition to selecting the artists in the Biennial, the jurors will award a total of $2,000 in cash prizes that will be presented at the opening
reception, Saturday, Dec. 13.
About the Jurors
Professor Tina Yapelli has originated more than 60 exhibitions as the Director of the University Art Gallery at San Diego State University since 1985. These exhibitions include contemporary art by regional, national and international artists. While offering a course in Gallery
Exhibition Design each semester, she also organizes a variety of educational programs for the University and off-campus communities, including symposia, lecture series, gallery
talks and visiting artists’ residencies. An advocate for public art, Yapelli has served on numerous public art selection committees including the City of San Diego’s Commission for Arts San Diego from January 2008 – December 2010.
Her writing on contemporary art has appeared in journals in the United States, and in a book published by Telos Art Publishing in England.
John D. Spiak is the Director/Chief Curator of California State
University, Fullerton’s Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana. From 1994 – 2011 he was Curator at the Arizona State University Art Museum. While he was there, Spiak curated the residency series Social Studies, initiating social practice projects with a number of noted contemporary artists. In
1997, he founded and was Acting Director for 15 years of the
Annual Short Film and Video Festival. Spiak has curated over
100 solo and group exhibitions and currently serves on the Editorial Board for the journal Museum and Social Issues and is co-founder of Santa Ana Sites. His programs have been supported by such institutions as the National Endowment for the Arts, Metabolic Studio and the Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
Eligibility
The Cannon Art Gallery’s 2014 Juried Biennial is open to artists
18 years of age and older, who live, work or have a studio in San Diego County. All work must be original and completed within the last three years. All media except performance, film and video are eligible for exhibition.
Cannon Invitational
In the following year, the gallery will present the Cannon Art Gallery Invitational that includes four 2014 Juried Biennial artists invited by Curator of Exhibitions Karen McGuire to be showcased in December 2015. A catalogue will accompany the Invitational exhibition.
CD Submission Requirements
Each artist may submit up to five works as JPEGs on CD. Please submit no more than five high resolution images at least 800
x 800 pixels, no larger than 1500 x 1500 pixels – image details must be included in the five. CD should be clearly labeled
with the artist’s name. Image files need to be in the same order as the entry form. Title digital files with the artist’s last name, first initial and number corresponding to the entry form. i.e. Smith_A_1.jpeg. Jurying will be done from CDs. Any accepted work which differs from the image provided may
be disqualified. NOTE: Because of the number of entries, we are unable to return CDs. If you have any further questions about CD formatting, please contact Jillian Buccola, Curator’s Assistant at 760-602-2057 or jillian.buccola@carlsbadca.gov.
Entry Fee and Requirements
A $20 (non-refundable) entry fee is required from each artist (cash or check). Make checks payable to the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts. A fee must accompany your submission.
Acceptance and Delivery of Work
Notification of acceptance will be sent out by email by Friday, Nov. 14, 2014. Please do not contact the gallery regarding acceptance. The artist is responsible for door-to-door delivery.
Hand delivery of accepted work will take place on:
Friday, Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Presentation
All entries must be ready for installation or framed and ready for hanging. No dimension of any work may exceed seven feet. No weight may exceed 100 pounds. Any special handling instructions must accompany the piece in writing. Each entry must be identified clearly on the bottom or back with artist’s name and title of work.
Conditions
The City of Carlsbad’s William D. Cannon Art Gallery reserves the right to refuse any work which differs from the submitted images, demonstrates inadequate framing/mounting or for
security of public safety reasons. All accepted entries will be considered temporary loans to the William D. Cannon Art Gallery/Cultural Arts Office. The city will assume insurance responsibility for the object upon receipt and inspection and during the exhibition. The city is not liable for any claim or loss, theft or damage of any kind during transportation. The city will exercise the usual care in handling and will provide coverage for the fair market value of the work or the fair costs of repair. It cannot be responsible for minor wear resulting from normal handling. Each artist in the exhibition will be
required to sign a loan agreement with the City of Carlsbad for loan of the work. Artwork may not be substituted for another work during the run of the exhibition, and no works may
be picked up before the end of the exhibition.
Return of Accepted Work
The exhibition closes Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015. All works are to be picked up on:
Sunday, Feb. 8, from noon – 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Artwork not picked up during the posted dates will be placed in off-premise storage at the artist’s risk and expense. The City of Carlsbad is not responsible for work left 30 days beyond the close of the exhibition.
