ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE
Every winter from January through March, creative individuals and collaborative groups are awarded the gift of time and space at our beautiful Arts Center in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains near Sisters, Oregon, for month-long residencies. Residencies are open to national and international artists in any discipline, as well as creative thinkers in engineering, design, and the sciences, who have emerged and established themselves beyond university training. APPLICATIONS
Applications for 2016 are now open through June 15, 2016. The applications process must be completed online through submittable.com. Apply here. Those artists who wish to apply as collaborators must submit under the collaboration category. Mature, as well as emerging artists, are encouraged to apply. Artists in the United States, US citizens abroad, and international artists are eligible. Proposals for creative residencies must be compatible with available working studio spaces, facilities, and resources. Applications for 2017 will open mid-January 2016. SELECTION PROCESS
Panels meet in late summer to review applications and invitations are made in early September. Artistic merit and promise are the basis for selections. While it is not required, an embrace of how art and nature communicate is encouraged at Caldera. A panel of fellow artists and art professionals chooses 21-36 artists for residences each year. The panel changes annually in order to keep the program dynamic. Final awards of residencies are at the discretion of Caldera. In some special instances, artists are invited to participate without submitting an application. Depending on funding, Caldera may make stipends available to attending residents. LIVING ENVIRONMENT
Residents are provided a private cabin (two walk-up log cabins and five A-frame cabins available) with sleeping loft, living room/work area, kitchenette, bathroom, and a porch overlooking Link Creek or with a view of Blue Lake from their windows. Cabins are heated by woodstove (with chopped wood provided) and electric heat. The kitchens have a coffeepot, two-burner stove, microwave, small refrigerator, dishes, and pots and pans. Once a week, dinner provided by Caldera, is shared as a group. There is very little cell service at Caldera. Dependable service is a 20-minute drive away in Sisters. A landline is available to residents. A phone card is required for long-distance calls. Wi-Fi is available throughout the Hearth Building, studios, and cabins. We regret that pets are not allowed. Caldera is a smoke-free environment. Overnight accommodations are limited to invited residents only. Artists with children and a caretaker are the only exception. Studio time and teaching and presentation opportunities are only for artists invited through the application process. WORK ENVIRONMENT
Bobbevy Residents are given 24-hour access to studios and the time and space to create. They have access to the Hearth Building where there is rehearsal and performance space, a mixing board, sound booth, speakers, a projector and large screen, and a well-equipped commercial kitchen. There is also shared access to wet and dry studios that house a darkroom, two kilns, 18” x 36” etching press, and large blank walls. By design, residents form a small community of 7–12 artists, depending on the group. Collaboration and exchange is encouraged. Writers and others not needing an expansive space, work in their A-frames, which contain a large table and living area. A shared loft space in the Hearth Building is optional for writers and digital artists. Visual artists work in one of Caldera’s two studios. Campbell Studio is a semi-private space that holds two studios for visual artists of all kinds. One side of Campbell Studio has two kilns, drying shelves, a work table, sink and counter; the other side has large walls, a work table, a large and small sink and counters. Studio B has large walls, a sink, counter, work table, a darkroom and the etching press. Both studios include natural light and large loft spaces above the main floor.
