Massey Klein Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in NADA House 2024 with new and recent sculptures by Jude Griebel. Displayed on pedestals in an indoor communal space, the gallery’s presentation will be the artist’s first time exhibiting at a NADA fair.

Held in Nolan Park on Governors Island, the upcoming sixth edition of NADA House will be open to the public from September 3rd through October 27th, 2024. The collaborative exhibition will bring together 17 art galleries and art spaces to present 21 artists, with participants engaging the unique character of the 19th-century former military residence and exhibiting work in a diverse range of mediums.

Jude Griebel explores the crisis of planetary collapse. With a focus on contemporary human behaviors such as consumption, the factory food system, land depletion, and waste production, Griebel’s works are objective yet fantastical depictions of humanity’s complex connection to the surrounding world. By weaving symbolism, diverse cultural references, and scientific reality the artist produces intricate portrayals of cyclical human consumption, eco-anxiety, and planetary decline, encouraging viewers to scrutinize their entanglement with the world and question destructive habitual behaviors.

Griebel’s series Revenants draws on animated foods from pop culture and history to reflect on the mechanics of consumerism, the erasure of living identity, and interspecific relationships. The presentation of his mollusk sculptures on Governors Island is distinct, speaking to contemporary consumption habits on the site of a historical estuary, and the home of the Billion Oyster Project environmental restoration site.

Jude Griebel holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design and an MFA in Sculpture and Ceramics from Concordia University and has recently been awarded the Folly Tree Arboretum’s Dancing Tree Award, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and an Alberta Foundation for the Arts Project Grant. Past residencies include AIR 3331, Pioneer Works, MASS MoCA Studios, the International Studio and Curatorial Program, and Banff Center for the Arts. 

Recent institutional exhibitions include the University of Victoria Legacy Galleries, the International Museum of Surgical Science, the Rochester Center for Contemporary Art, the Holter Museum of Art, the Esker Foundation, the Whyte Museum, Czong Institute for Contemporary Art, and the Art Gallery of Alberta.

Noteworthy press includes Galleries West, Hyperallergic, Canadian Art Magazine, Art + Design Magazine, and The National Gallery of Canada Magazine. Griebel’s work is in permanent collections at Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Art Gallery of Alberta, Frans Masereel Centrum, Colart Contemporary Canadian Art Collection, Sakima Art Museum, Equitable Bank Group, Silpakorn University, Silvercorp Mining, and Volpert Foundation. Having grown up on a family farm in rural Alberta, the artist now lives and works in New York City.

Hakkında KolajART

KolajART, çağdaş sanatın güncel üretimlerini, eleştirel düşünceyi ve sanat yazarlığını bir araya getiren bağımsız bir uluslararası çevrim içi sanat platformudur. Dergi, 2013 yılının Kasım ayında DekolajART adıyla kurulmuş, ancak bir takım yaşanan sorunlar nedeniyle 2014 yılının Ocak ayından itibaren KolajART adıyla yayın hayatını sürdürmeye başlamıştır. Türkiye'nin ilk plastik sanatlar odaklı çevrim içi dergilerinden biri olan KolajART, dijital ortamda sanat yazarlığı ve eleştirisinin gelişimine katkı sunan öncü yayınlardan biridir. Kuruluşundan bu yana yalnızca yerel bir sanat ortamının sesi olmakla yetinmeyip, sınırları aşan bir bakış açısıyla hareket eden dergi, farklı coğrafyalardan sanatçıların, küratörlerin ve düşünürlerin katkılarına açık bir yayın politikası benimsemiştir. Bu yönüyle KolajART, Türkiye merkezli olmakla birlikte, içerik ve ilgi alanı bakımından ulusal sınırların ötesine uzanan, çok dilli ve çok kültürlü bir okur-yazar kitlesine hitap eden bir mecra hâline gelmiştir. Bağımsız ve kâr amacı gütmeyen bir web yayını olarak KolajART; sergi değerlendirmeleri, sanatçı söyleşileri, kuramsal incelemeler ve sanat tarihi perspektifinden yorumlarla Türkiye'de ve dünyada çağdaş sanat ortamına eleştirel ve düşünsel bir katkı sunmayı amaçlar. Dergi, yalnızca İstanbul, Ankara ya da İzmir gibi Türkiye'nin sanat merkezlerinde gerçekleşen etkinlikleri değil; Berlin, Paris, Vietnam, New York ve Palermo gibi uluslararası sanat sahnesinin nabzının attığı şehirlerdeki bienaller, sergiler ve sanat fuarlarını da takip ederek, okurlarına küresel çapta bir sanat gündemi sunmaktadır. Farklı kuşaklardan sanatçıları, araştırmacıları ve sanat yazarlarını —yerli ve yabancı fark etmeksizin— ortak bir tartışma zemininde buluşturan dergi, güncel sanatın eleştirel hafızasını oluşturmaya yönelik süreklilik taşıyan önemli bir dijital arşiv ve paylaşım alanı niteliği taşır. Bu bağlamda KolajART, yalnızca bir yayın organı olmanın ötesinde, Türkiye ile dünya sanat çevreleri arasında bir köprü işlevi gören, disiplinlerarası ve sınır ötesi bir düşünce platformu olarak konumlanmaktadır.
