New York at Night – Large Scale Photographs

Bernarducci Meisel Gallery is pleased to announce the second solo exhibition for photographer Sally Davies. This exhibition will include large scale photographs, all a 40 x 60” image size, of New York at Night. New York is often referred to as ‘the city that never sleeps’ – Davies chose to document its restless nights exposing the beauty of the mundane and sometimes homely neighborhood streets. Each photograph reflects on the essence of community and commerce. Block Drugs is a photograph of a local east village pharmacy. At first glance, the photograph appears be just a corner view of the luminescent storefront at night. Its window display and bright neon sign are both on an ominous dark background void of any subject. Cascading onto the cement sidewalk is an array of color reflected from the bright sign of the pharmacy and the window display. However, upon closer inspection a figure of a man smoking on one side of the storefront emerges from the dark background. On the other side, a dimly lit window display reveals a nail salon closing up shop for the night. In Times Square, Davies captures the hustle and bustle of the crossroads of the world. The famed intersection is shown from 50th Street looking downtown. Yellow taxi cabs and other traffic approach it from the left side and the bright colorful sign M&M’s World, the official M&Ms candy store, flanks the other side of the composition. There is distance between the foreground of the image and the cluster of people huddled in on a far corner. This distance is metaphorical to the anonymity one experiences in New York City while surrounded by so many people even at a late hour when the city never ceases to rest. Sally Davies was born in Winnepeg, Canada and lives and works in New York City. She has exhibited extensively internationally in notable group exhibitions such as A Democracy of Photos: New York City that has traveled to the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C, the Kunsthaus Zurich in Switzerland, as well as many other museums. Davies’ has recently been featured in the New York Times. Her “Happy Meal Project”, over 1400 daily photos of a Happy Meal from McDonald’s that has yet to decompose, has been featured on major news networks such as CBS, FOX, and MSNBC. Her work may be divided in several series; the Happy Meal Project, Photographs of Paris and Photographs of New York. Frank Bernarducci and Louis K. Meisel founded Bernarducci Meisel Gallery in 2000. The gallery is well known for a commitment to established and developing realist artists. The gallery is located at 37 West 57th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues on the third floor.
