Bernarducci Meisel Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Jock Sturges, exhibitinglarge-format color photographs from his new book, Fanny, published by Steidl in both English and French. The photographs in this book provide an extended portrait of Fanny. As we turn the pages of this book we follow her through life. On the cover, we are greeted with her solemnly looking out over the ocean with her hands crossed behind her back and her shoulder blades protruding. She explained to Jock that she thought of her shoulder blades as her wings, which she hoped her mother would see as she looked down on her from heaven. Fanny’s mother passed away tragically just weeks before the photograph was taken. The verdant emotion overcoming this child’s innocence is overwhelming at times. In conjunction with this exhibition, Louis K. Meisel Gallery will present a retrospective exhibition for the photographer.

A naturist since birth, Fanny grew up in a tightly knit community on the western shores of France in Montalivet. There it really did take a village to raise a child…and raise her they did. She has grown into a beautiful strong woman. Jock’s final photographs of Fanny show her pregnant. The last photograph in the book shows the grace and intelligence Fanny has acquired over the years. She has now blossomed into a strong woman. She will embark on a new journey as she graces her child with the wisdom she acquired.

The quintessential core of Sturges photographs is the relationship; the relationship between the models and nature, and most importantly the relationship that the models have with themselves and with the artist. Captivatingly honest, these works are touchstones to the trials and tribulations of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Evocative of a striking tranquility, these portraits are extremely challenging in the sense that they compel the viewer to reevaluate their own self- consciousness.

Jock Sturges received his B.F.A. in perceptual psychology and photography from Marlboro College in Marlboro, Vermont and his M.F.A. in Photography at the San Francisco Art Institute. He has exhibited worldwide since 1976. His photographs are included in numerous public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Fanny is his eleventh and newest book of photographs, featuring photographs of his model and muse Fanny. All images from the book are available for acquisition. Autographed copies of the book itself can be obtained from the Gallery.

KolajART, çağdaş sanatın güncel üretimlerini, eleştirel düşünceyi ve sanat yazarlığını bir araya getiren bağımsız bir uluslararası çevrim içi sanat platformudur. Dergi, 2013 yılının Kasım ayında DekolajART adıyla kurulmuş, ancak bir takım yaşanan sorunlar nedeniyle 2014 yılının Ocak ayından itibaren KolajART adıyla yayın hayatını sürdürmeye başlamıştır. Türkiye'nin ilk plastik sanatlar odaklı çevrim içi dergilerinden biri olan KolajART, dijital ortamda sanat yazarlığı ve eleştirisinin gelişimine katkı sunan öncü yayınlardan biridir. Kuruluşundan bu yana yalnızca yerel bir sanat ortamının sesi olmakla yetinmeyip, sınırları aşan bir bakış açısıyla hareket eden dergi, farklı coğrafyalardan sanatçıların, küratörlerin ve düşünürlerin katkılarına açık bir yayın politikası benimsemiştir. Bu yönüyle KolajART, Türkiye merkezli olmakla birlikte, içerik ve ilgi alanı bakımından ulusal sınırların ötesine uzanan, çok dilli ve çok kültürlü bir okur-yazar kitlesine hitap eden bir mecra hâline gelmiştir. Bağımsız ve kâr amacı gütmeyen bir web yayını olarak KolajART; sergi değerlendirmeleri, sanatçı söyleşileri, kuramsal incelemeler ve sanat tarihi perspektifinden yorumlarla Türkiye'de ve dünyada çağdaş sanat ortamına eleştirel ve düşünsel bir katkı sunmayı amaçlar. Dergi, yalnızca İstanbul, Ankara ya da İzmir gibi Türkiye'nin sanat merkezlerinde gerçekleşen etkinlikleri değil; Berlin, Paris, Vietnam, New York ve Palermo gibi uluslararası sanat sahnesinin nabzının attığı şehirlerdeki bienaller, sergiler ve sanat fuarlarını da takip ederek, okurlarına küresel çapta bir sanat gündemi sunmaktadır. Farklı kuşaklardan sanatçıları, araştırmacıları ve sanat yazarlarını —yerli ve yabancı fark etmeksizin— ortak bir tartışma zemininde buluşturan dergi, güncel sanatın eleştirel hafızasını oluşturmaya yönelik süreklilik taşıyan önemli bir dijital arşiv ve paylaşım alanı niteliği taşır. Bu bağlamda KolajART, yalnızca bir yayın organı olmanın ötesinde, Türkiye ile dünya sanat çevreleri arasında bir köprü işlevi gören, disiplinlerarası ve sınır ötesi bir düşünce platformu olarak konumlanmaktadır.
