The Competition
Year 2017: Representational / Realism Painting only
Young Painters, U.S. residents, ages 25 – 35 as of competition entry are invited to participate in an annual juried competition for the 2017 $10, 000 William and Dorothy Yeck Award. Entrants should have achieved a significant degree of success as an emerging artist of noteworthy talent. The winner will become part of the Miami University Best Young Painters of the Twenty-First Century Collection.
Juror
2017: Jed Perl, New York, New York
Jed Perl is a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books and has over the years been the art critic for Vogue and The New Republic. A reviewer in the Atlantic, writing about Magicians and Charlatans—Perl’s most recent collection of essays—observed that he “may be the finest American critic at work today in any field.” And the poet John Ashbery, writing of Perl’s criticism, has said that he is “an almost solitary, essential voice.” Jed Perl’s other books include Antoine’s Alphabet, Paris Without End, and New Art City, which was a 2005 New York Times Notable Book. He is currently working on the first full-length biography of the sculptor Alexander Calder, to be published by Knopf. Perl is the recipient of awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Academy in Rome, the Leon Levy Biography Center at the City University of New York, and the Ingram-Merrill Foundation. He has appeared on Charlie Rose, the McNeil Lehrer News Hour, CNN, and National Public Radio; he teaches at The New School in New York City, where he lives.
Your Entry
Your entry packet is to consist of the following:

- Entry Form and Artist Contract: hard copy please
- Submission of Paintings: up to 5 entries; no dimension exceeding 72″, artwork completed within the past three years that demonstrate the scope and depth of your work. All works submitted must be available for the exhibition and purchase award. (Exhibition dates: December 14, 2016 – February 10, 2017.) All images submitted should be on CD or thumb-drive, JPG, 5” x 7”, 355 dpi, RGB color mode. Please organize the disc/drive with each JPG having last name of artist and entry number, (corresponding with the artwork number on entry form.) The word document should be titled, Image List, with the following information per entry: Artist name, Title of work, Year of work, Media, Dimensions.

Notification
Finalists chosen by the Juror will be notified in mid-October 2016. Images of the finalists’ works will be retained by Miami University. The $10,000 Yeck Purchase Award winner may be invited to visit the University to coincide with the 2018 competition. Participation in the exhibition entry process constitutes an understanding and acceptance of the conditions set forth herein, including the right of Miami University to use submitted images for publicity and educational purposes.
Shipping
All finalists will assume the cost of shipment of artworks to Miami University. Works must be packed in reusable crates/boxes and constructed to withstand the rigors of commercial shipping. Finalists are responsible for the repair of damaged crates before the works are returned. Works may also be hand-delivered. Hand-delivered works must also be picked-up from Miami University. Miami will assume the cost of return shipping of the finalists’ paintings. Works will be fully insured while on the premises of Miami University and while being returned to the artist.
