THE NUDE FIGURE JURIED EXHIBITION
October 16 – November 19, 2016
Thank you for your interest in applying to The Nude Figure juried by Paul DuSold and Scott Noel. The exhibition will run from October 16 through November 19,2016 and will be held at the Wayne Art Center, 413 Maplewood Avenue, Wayne, PA, 19087, 610-688-3553, www.wayneart.org.
The Nude Figure will present a survey of contemporary responses to the nude to illuminate resonances between traditions of imagining the figure and the artist’s personal experience. The theme of mirroring is a metaphor for the persistence of the nude as a theme in art and our shared visual understandings of the body. Entries are being accepted in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, glass and mixed media.

Wayne Art Center is pleased to welcome Paul DuSold and Scott Noel as the jurors for the The Nude Figure exhibition.
Paul DuSold lives and maintains a studio in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia. He exhibits his work in Philadelphia at the Gross McCleaf gallery. Paul is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. His work is best described as atmospheric representational with subject matter including nudes, portraits and still-life. For many years Paul has taught painting at the Woodmere Museum and the Fleisher Art Memorial.
His teaching methodology is to emphasize in teaching that it is always on understanding of fundamental. I believe the students are best served by learning to see with more sensitivity and handle their materials with more awareness and sensitivity.
Paul DuSold’s artwork is best described as atmospheric representationalism. Still life, figures in landscape and portraits are his preferred subject matter. DuSold’s influences are mostly sixteenth and seventeenth century Italian and Spanish painters; he is perhaps most informed by the use of oil paint as an expressive medium by the Venetian artists of the sixteenth century. The primary aspiration of his efforts is to paint pictures whole effect of meaning is achieved through a very acute balance of color, light and shadow and scale of forms.
Scott Noel began teaching and exhibiting in Philadelphia in 1980, two years after completing undergraduate study at Washington University in St. Louis. Since that time he has mounted over thirty solo exhibitions at galleries, universities and museums alongside many group shows. Solo shows have appeared at the State Museum in Harrisburg, the University of Virginia, the Bowery Gallery, the Painting Center and fifteen exhibitions at the More Gallery, Mangel, and Gross McCleaf Galleries in Philadelphia. Noel has curated exhibitions for museums, “The Evidence of the Senses” at the Woodmere Museum in 1990 and “Imaginative Affinities: Echoes of Edwin Dickinson in Contemporary Painting” at the Pennsylvania Academy in 2002. He has also written catalogue essays for peers and forbears, including Lennart Anderson, Larry Day, Rose Naftulin and Sangram Majumdar. Noel’s paintings are included in numerous private, public, and corporate collections. He has received grants from the Bader Foundation, The Pennsylvania Council for the Arts and the Independence Foundation as well as a fellowship to the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris. His work has been reviewed in Arts and Art in America and he has twice been profiled in American Artist (1997, 2009). Scott teaches figure drawing and painting in the Certificate/BFA and MFA programs and is a critic in the MFA program.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Open to all artists working in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, glass and mixed media.
2. Work submitted must be innovative and original in design.
3. Works submitted must have been completed after January 1, 2014.
4. Collaborative work is accepted. Please include all artists’ names on the on-line application.
5. Some size restrictions apply. Please contact WAC if you have an excessively large and/or complex installation.
6. No accepted work may be picked up before the closing of the exhibition.
7. Art work must be available for sale during the length of the exhibition.
8. If artwork is sold during the jurying acceptance process, the Wayne Art Center will retain 40% of the retail price.
9. Work damaged in shipping may not be presented based on extent of deterioration.
10. Withdrawal of accepted work by the artist prior to the exhibition will result in exclusion from exhibiting at WAC for the following year (2017).
11. All artwork submitted online must be available for the entire duration of the jurying process and show. If the piece is accepted to both The Nude Figure and a simultaneously running show, the piece must only be exhibited in The Nude Figure.
12. Wayne Art Center reserves the right to reject entries that do not meet the requirements. Shipped work that differs from work accepted from digital submission will be disqualified. All accepted work must have proper identification.
Awards
Our efforts to cultivate organizations that acknowledge artists in various disciplines are ongoing. We are very pleased to announce $3,000+ in prize awards this year. The jurors, Paul DuSold and Scott Noel will select and announce the award winners on October 16, 2016.
Once an artist is accepted into The Nude Figure, additional group and/or solo exhibition opportunities may come available at the Wayne Art Center.

Entry and Exhibition Fees
The entry fee is $45 for up to two artworks. (Extended deadline is available from September
10th – 12th the fee will be $65.) An overall image and up to 2 optional detail images of at least 2100 pixels resolution may be submitted per piece. Two pieces total are accepted per one artist application.
No slide entries or drop off of artwork will be accepted.
Visa, MasterCard, or PayPal, will be accepted for entry fee payment. United States applicants may pay by personal check. Mail check to the WAC mailing address. The application will not be finalized until the entry fee has been paid.
Communications
The artist contact email provided on the on-line application must remain active during the submission and exhibition process. The artist is responsible for checking their email for acceptance and/or decline and other information regarding the The Nude Figure exhibition. No paperwork or communications will be mailed regarding acceptance and/or declined information.
Shipping
*If work is selected for The Nude Figure, the artist is financially responsible for the shipping to Wayne Art Center and return shipping and in-transit insurance both ways of the work.
If the artwork is purchased, the return shipping label will not be used and therefore the noted account will not be billed.*
For internationally accepted work, please review the country of origin shipping and custom regulations and the best way for US customs to receive the work. Regulations and rules change frequently and can cause artwork to be held up in customs or be returned to the artist.
WAC will not be responsible for loss or damage to work in transit to or from Wayne Art Center. Wayne Art Center will not responsible for loss, theft or damaged work after 30 days from the last day of show, November 19, 2016, due to artist failing to retrieve exhibition work.
Insurance and Liability
While every care will be exercised in the handling of all works submitted, the Wayne Art Center cannot assume liability for any loss or damage to artwork in transportation or otherwise. The artist is responsible for insurance while the artwork is in transit to Wayne Art Center as well as when the piece is shipped back following the exhibition. In the event of damage to the artwork during the shipping, the artist will be required to provide documentation confirming the value of the work, the extent of the claim and to settle claims directly with the shipping carrier.
Neither the Wayne Art Center nor any agent will be responsible for damage or loss to any work of art submitted. Wayne Art Center provides insurance coverage only while work is on our premises. Other insurance coverage is strongly recommended and is the artist’s responsibility. Once the artwork is shipped with the designated carrier, the insurance is the responsibility of the artist and not with WAC.
Installation
If the artwork installation is overly complex, WAC will contact the artist to request assistance with the installation process. The artist may be required to assume financial responsibility for any alternations (painted walls, site specific pedestals, armatures, lighting, electrical, etc.) that are requested or required by a particular installation. The artist is welcome to install their complex artworks if necessary. Installation requests must be requested in advance and approved by WAC.
Pricing
The Nude Figure artwork must be available for sale. All work must be available for sale during the application process and until October 16, 2016. NFS or POR submissions will not be accepted. There is not a threshold for artwork pricing level.
If the piece is sold during the application process or after acceptance into the show, the artist must contactWAC and the piece will be disqualified.
Please note that price of artwork entry may not be changed after it is set with the online application. WACwill retain 40% commission of the sale price. All work must be available for sale and therefore insurance will be set at 60% of sale value. All work will be insured while in the Wayne Art Center facility.
Accepted work must be for sale in order to be included in this exhibition and a price must be listed on the entry application. Once this price is established with the online application, itCANNOT be revised on inventory sheets, or any communications. Otherwise, price difference will be the responsibility of the artist and not WAC.
Commission
WAC will retain 40% commission of work sold during the exhibition dates, or on any sale that results from mediation by the WAC staff.
