Preview September 8, 12 – 8pm
On view through October 23, 2021
Nahmad Contemporary and Perrotin, in collaboration with the artist’s estate, will co-present the first-ever extensive survey dedicated to Georges Mathieu, founder of Lyrical Abstraction and a pioneer of Action Painting, in the United States. The exhibition spans both spaces and brings together fifty works, including museum loans and never-before-seen paintings, for a reevaluation of the artist’s contributions to the development of post-war art. As a key pioneer of Action Painting, the exhibition will pay particular attention to the artist’s monumental paintings, which exemplify his commitment to the encounter between body and canvas. To mark the occasion, we are pleased to publish the first comprehensive monograph on the artist’s life and work, with an essay by Germano Celant and an interview with Nancy Spector.
Mathilde Denize
Opening reception Wednesday, September 8, 12-8pm
September 9 – October 23, 2021
On our second floor, Perrotin is pleased to present the first exhibition in New York by French artist Mathide Denize, which will conclude her participation in an artist residency at Villa Medici in Rome. A collector of discarded objects, she often cuts up her older paintings and then weaves them into new forms with found materials. Thus, new artworks are born from remnants of the past, a metaphor for the complicated existence of human beings. Opening on September 8th, in Reverse for a Better Move, Denize brings together an unprecedented assortment of figures that blur the boundaries between sculpture and painting, costume and installation.
