| ARTIST BIOS |
| Rachel Burgess grew up in Massachusetts. She received a B.A. in Literature from Yale University in 2004, and an M.F.A. in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in 2007. She currently lives in Manhattan, where she divides her time between teaching, illustrating and printmaking. Her work appears in galleries throughout the New York area, including the International Print Center of New York in Manhattan, the Edward Hopper House and Museum in Nyack, and the Monmouth Museum in New Jersey. Ms. Burgess has had solo exhibits in New York and in Maine; she has also exhibited overseas at the Pyramida Center for Contemporary Art in Israel. She is the recipient of several awards. Her prints have been recognized by publications such as CMYK Magazine, 3×3 Magazine of Contemporary Illustration, the Society of Illustrators, and the New York Society of Etchers. Her illustrations are part of the publication collection at the Whitney Museum of Art. |
| Shaina Craft is currently attending The New York Academy of Art to earn her MFA in painting. She graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2011 with a BFA in painting and although she is from the Philadelphia area, she currently lives and works in the NYC area. Her work is primarily figurative and her obsession with the human form makes sure she never strays far from her favorite subject. She focuses on the primordial aspects of human nature– what it means to be a conscious human being in this modern age. Flesh and pigment form unique images, portraits that are not of any one person, figures transfixed in the moment between retreating and unfurling. Craft has exhibited at New York Academy’s Tribeca Ball, MFA Open Studios, Brooklyn Fireproof and Pentimenti Gallery in Philadelphia. Shaina’s Flesh Experiment 117 was chosen for the “Art of the State: 2013” exhibition at the PA State Museum in Harrisburg. |
| Archer Dougherty grew up in Albuquerque and studied every single medium but painting at the University of New Mexico. She took as much drawing as she could, but in a school with generational abstract professors she was never encouraged in her development as a figurative, narrative draftsperson. Drawing was a “low” media and method, used as stepping stone toward a “finished” piece. She finished school with degrees in three-dimensional media. In 2010, frustrated with her 3D work, Dougherty turned back to her figurative basics, and again was pulled inexorably to her first artistic love: drawing. She then began experimenting with painting in oils and learned suddenly that what suited her most was the one media she never academically studied. Dougherty is currently hard at work relearning classical techniques, while exhibiting in shows around the globe. |
| Laura Fantini is a hyper-realistic minimalist artist who specializes in colored pencil still life. Her artwork is defined by strong contrast values and highly theatrical compositions with dramatic lighting. She was born in Bologna, Italy and graduated from the Liceo Artistico and Accademia di Belle Arti in her hometown. Since then, Ms. Fantini’s art has exhibited nationally and internationally and has been widely published and documented. Recently, she exhibited in Chelsea at Denise Bibro Fine Arts where she was selected for the “Art From the Boros II” Exhibition. She was awarded First Prize for both the First Annual Sylvia Glesmann Floral Exhibition and the Jane Peterson Memorial Award at the Salmagundi Club in New York. She also received an Honorable Mention at Gallery 364 in Brooklyn and The Canson Paper Award for Excellence Recognition in the Colored Pencil Society of America “Explore This 9! Show”. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Hunt Institute, Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA), at the Monaco Government Tourist Office in New York City and San Lazzaro (BO) City Hall. Ms. Fantini is a member of the Salmagundi Club in New York and the Colored Pencil Society of America. |
| John Hampshire is a painter originally from Chicago, IL. He received his Bachelor degree from Skidmore College in ‘94, and his MFA from SUNY, in ’97. Hampshire’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. His solo exhibitions include: “Layers and Labyrinths” at The Show Walls, 1133 Avenue of the Americas, NYC, “Expressive Eccentricities”, State College of Florida, “Labyrinthine”, at Phoenix Gallery, NYC and “Recent Work” at the Walsh Gallery, Georgetown University, Washington D.C. Hampshire lives in Troy, NY with his wife, Marybeth, and 4 dachshunds in a former church, which also serves as his studio. He is currently an Associate Professor of Art at SUNY Adirondack in Queensbury, NY. |
| Seung Jong Lee is a South Korean artist that utilizes lithograph, silkscreen and woodblock printmaking methods to create his figurative style works. His prints have been exhibited in both South Korea and America and include: Galley EM, Areupace N and Kyung-In Gallery in South Korea and University of New Mexico and Brooklyn College in America. Lee is completing his MFA in Printmaking at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, Brooklyn, New York and finished his Professional Printer Training Program in 2011 at Tamarind Institute of Lithography, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Lee is an active member of KCPA (The Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association). |
| Evan Kitson received his BFA from the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, and his MFA from the New York Academy of Art. He has also studied with Odd Nerdrum at his home in France, as well as the Art Students League of New York. Kitson taught at the New York Academy of Art, The Janus Collaborative School of Art, the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, The Teaching Studios of Art, and privately in his Lancaster, PA Studio. Kitson has exhibited his work in galleries in New York City, New Jersey, and Lancaster City, Pennsylvania. His work can be found in the newly published book: The Nerdrum School: The Master and His Students. |
| Ilya Mirochnik is a figurative and plein air painter who immigrated to the United States from Odessa, Ukraine. From a young age Iliya pursued training in the arts in the Russian academic tradition. He studied at LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Art and in the Bridgeview School of Fine Arts in New York under the tutelage of professors trained in the art academies of the former Soviet Union. Iliya studied in St. Petersburg, Russia in the prestigious I.E. Repin State Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture from which he received his Masters of Fine Arts degree in painting. He has been the recipient of a number of prestigious scholarships and awards both in the United States and in Russia, winning the “First Place” award in the American Portrait Society’s International Portrait Competition. Currently, Iliya lives in New York where he paints and teaches. |
| Shari Weschler Rubeck earned her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, with a major in painting and a minor in art history. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the Northeast including Cassandra Complex Gallery, Elisa Contemporary in NY, Gallery Z and Hallway Gallery. Rubeck was awarded Featured Emerging Artist in Visual Overture Magazine, was chosen for inclusion in Australian publication 6YL & its pop up exhibition at The Food Court. Her works are in numerous public and private collections. Rubeck resides with her family in Rhode Island and runs an afterschool arts program in Rhode Island called Artrageous Adventures. |
| Mike Selbach is an artist/engineer who studied at the University of California Santa Cruz and City College, City University of New York. Selbach has worked proficiently in steel, bronze, wood, paper and clay exploring issues related to process and addressing the classic quandary, ‘Is the hand of the craft a prima facie issue or a device’.
